Use the map above to answer questions 1-3.

1) How many plates are shown on this map?

2) Draw arrows directly on the map showing the direction each of the plates is moving. Use Google Draw (if you have a Google account) or any program you want, like the Preview program that opens screenshots automatically on Macs–it has annotation tools. You will need to take a screenshot of the map and import it into Google Draw or Sketchpad or work on the screenshot directly, annotate it with the arrows, and then easiest thing to do is take a screenshot of that annotated map and then upload the image here. You could also create a shared space to work on it with your partners within Google Draw.

3) Which of the landmasses shown on the map would have volcanoes? Why?

Use the figures above showing cross sectional views of spreading centers to answer questions 4-6.

4) What is a seafloor magnetic anomaly, otherwise known as a seafloor paleomagnetic stripe?

5) Using the scale bars and the ages provided, calculate the rate of movement of the seafloor away from Spreading Center A and Spreading Center B.

6) At which spreading center is the seafloor moving fastest? How does that influence the number of magnetic anomalies within 60 km of the spreading center at each location?
